describing people

3rd Period Matrix- 10/17

Class Activities:

-Students reviewed concordance, making sure adjectives match their nouns in gender and number.
-Students practiced conversational skills in partners.
-Those who did not present their famous person did so today.
-Students did a reading on Day of the Dead, and began answering comprehension questions.
-HOMEWORK: I asked students to think about what they wanted to do to celebrate Day of the Dead this year. If students missed class, they should print off or pick up the reading and answer the comprehension questions (see attachments).

Fluency level:

Sobre mi: book about students

Class Activities:

Students arrived and wrote a few sentences describing themselves in Spanish.
ej. Soy estudiante en Logan. Tengo pelo rizado y ojos azules. Soy simpática y feliz. Me gusta equiar y leer.

Students received attached handout with several different categories. Students are going to put together a book about their life using concepts we've been working on since the beginning of the year. They should have already completed a page in their book about their typical weekly schedule. In class, students were to write at least 4 sentences in each category. We went over some common connector words:
en - in/on
con - with
y - and
o - or
también - also

Tarea: complete 4 sentences in each of these categories: Sobre mi, mi familia, Mi ciudad

Fluency level:

Gustar: describing people and their likes/dislikes

Class Activities:

Do now activity: students corrected the mistakes in the sentences below:
1. Me gusto la escuela. (Me gusta la escuela).
2. Te encanta los perros. (Te encantan los perros).
3. Me gustan viajar. (Me gusta viajar)
4. Te gusta español. (Te gusta el español).
5. Me gusta no correr. (No me gusta correr).

Students received attached worksheet and had to match the descriptions with the students and answer questions on the second page.

Describing people: La historia de Esmerelda

Class Goals:

For students to practice recent vocabulary describing people through inventing and following along with a class story.

Class Activities:

Students arrive and complete the do now activity (attached below) to practice adjectives that describe people.

As a class, we're inventing a story to utilize some of the vocabulary and structures we've been working on recently. We're using TPRS to tell the story, which uses a lot of repetition and is done entirely in Spanish.

New vocabulary we're using for this story:
quiere encontrar a un mejor amigo (she wants to find a best friend)
viaja a (she travels to)
conoce a (she meets)
por tren (by train)
por avión (by plane)
por carro (by car)

Story so far (that we've created together):

Esmerelda (la protagonista) tiene 75 años.
Es generosa, elegante, y guapa.

Esmerelda tiene un problema. Quiere encontrar a un mejor amigo.
Primero, viaja a Colombia por avión.
Conoce a Jorge.
...to be continued...
The rest of the story aims to practice our ability at this point to describe people (physically, personality, nationality, age, name) and to practice our new phrases above.

Tarea (homework): students need to make flashcards out of the vocabulary we're working on including: words to describe people (worksheet attached), family members (students should have this in their notes as we've worked on it several times), and the verb tener (definition below). We've been working on all of these concepts the last several weeks.

tener (to have)
tengo (I have)
tienes (you have)
(él, ella, usted) tiene (he/she/you formal have)
tenemos (we have)
(ellos, ustedes) tienen (they/y'all have)
