Class Activities: 

Ways to teach and practice numbers in Spanish

  • Present and go over numbers 1-1000 (see document attached).
  • Play number bingo (document attached). Explain that the comma and period are switched in Spanish-speaking country, so 4.000 is four thousand and $3,76 is three dollars and seventy six cents. Call out the number and students says the word associated with it. Students call out numbers when they are ready.
  • In pairs, give students two dice that they roll and call out the number while partner confirms. Alternate. When they are ready add more and more dice so the number gets bigger and more tricky.

Students were given a similar but different partial menu (attached). Each menu only contained half of the pricing information, so students had to ask each other "¿cuánto cuesta el té con limón?" while the other student answered. Once we were done, reviewed menus, definitions and prices as a class.

Tarea: continue to work on vocabulary related to food that we've been working on the last month. Students will be taking a test shortly on food vocabulary.

Tarea: final draft of schedule. Students had previously written their typical weekly schedules with times, class subjects and after-school activities. Students who handed in their schedules got their corrections back and need to come up with a final draft. We will be compiling information about students to put together a book about them.

Students arrived and studied their notes about numbers, telling time, months, and days of the week.

In pairs, students competed to practice vocabulary we've been working on the last several weeks about time. Review included questions like:

  • La _____ de hoy es el 4 de febrero. fecha
  • La clase de español comienza a las ____. ocho.
  • Es el día entre miércoles y viernes. jueves
  • Quinientos cuarenta y dos. 542
  • Hay 7 días en una __________________. semana
  • La estación que incluye marzo, abril, mayo. primavera

Tarea: prepare for a quick quiz Monday about days of week, months, numbers, telling time and general time-related vocabulary. Also, several students haven't handed in a schedule of their typical week which they need to do by Monday.

In pairs, students received clocks as well as times written out in Spanish (attached). Groups matched up the clock with the correct time in Spanish. Once times were matched, students practiced in pairs:

Students received attached review worksheet to practice their time related vocabulary. Whatever they didn't complete in class is for homework.

Comprehensión auditiva: telling time

Introduced to students:
comienza (to start)/ termina (to end)

La clase de español comienza a las ocho.
La clase de español termina a las ocho y veinticinco.

Students received a sheet with several blank clocks. They listened and drew on the clock face what time each class started and ended.

Students started writing out their schedule for one day, using the classes above and adding on new vocabulary:

Tarea: students will bring in their typical schedule for the week including classes and after-school activities. The schedule should include times (ej. 8:00 español).

As a class, we reviewed numbers 1-1000. Drilled numbers by asking students what year they were born.

Using the phrase Mi fecha de nacimiento es el 18 de noviembre de 1999 students got in line in order of age (using year of birth). Students all repeated the year that they were born.

Tarea: students are to match the most likely photo with the description of the person's schedule in the activity attached. There will be some new vocabulary that students can look up in a dictionary or online at wordreference.

We continued practicing time-related vocabulary where I described a word and they needed to guess what word.

We practiced numbers 1-100. Students were to have memorized numbers 1-20, and I presented numbers 20-100. In pairs, students received a pair of dice and alternated rolling them while the other students called out the number.

Students learned the following phrases:
¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? When is your birthday?
Mi cumpleaños es el 17 de enero. My birthday is the 17th of January.

Using these questions, students lined themselves up in order of birthday.

Tarea: memorize numbers 1-100 and write down numbers in Spanish from 1-1000. When writing numbers down, it's only necessary to count by hundreds (200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000) and provide one number between (205, 334, 482).

Practiced vocabulary by giving clues and students gave response:

Numbers 1-100 were written on the board. Students wrote down numbers 1-20.

Tarea: Continue to review all time vocabulary (days, months, seasons, and vocabulary from today). Memorize numbers 1-20.
